SHORT FILMS SCREENING AND DISCUSSION JUNE 2006
S-Express Philippines
Programmed by Alexis A. Tioseco
Karya-karya film pendek Filipina dalam program pertukaran film
pendek Asia Tenggara ini dipilih dengan pertimbangan sebagai karya-karya
yang cukup representatif dari keberadaan film pendek di negara yang
terlibat pada tahun 2005.
S-Express diprakarsai oleh Yuni Hadi (Substation, Singapore), Amir
Muhammad (Malaysian Shorts), dan Chalida Uabumrungjit (Thai Film
Foundation) pada tahun 2002 dan sejak tahun 2004 Minikino ikut serta
untuk memprogram bagian film pendek Indonesia. Pada tahun 2005,
S-Express mengalami penambahan program, yaitu dari Filipina dan
dari Cina.

Salat
John Torres, Philippines 2004, Digital Video, 12 minutes
Salat is composed of several vignettes that snap-shot urban life;
then juxtaposed with images of love, friendship and everyday life.
John spent a year as apprentice for director Carlitos Siguion-Reyna
and took courses in directing with Marilou Diaz-Abaya and French
cinematographer Michel Hugo.
Beberapa vignette seputar kehidupan urban yang ditabrakkan dengan
gambaran cinta dan persahabatan.

Juan Kaliwa (Left Turn)
Roxlee, Lai Crisostomo and Maisa Demetillo, Philippines 2005, 35mm,
15 minutes
A man and a woman make love to a tree before going to a polluted
city. This animation combines pastel drawings with oil on glass.
Roque Federizon Lee (born 1950) is a cartoonist who began making
films in 1983. His unconventional, cynical humor has made him an
icon of Philippines' underground cinema.
Seorang pria dan seorang wanita bercinta dengan sebuah pohon sebelum
pergi ke suatu kota penuh polusi. Animasi ini memadukan teknik gambar
pastel dengan minyak di atas kaca.

Red Saga
Gabriela Krista Dalena, Philippines 2004, 16mm, 15 minutes
A boy dots the fields with flags to stop birds from preying on the
harvest. Another creates noise with tin cans. A startling transformation
occurs.
Kiri studied documentary and cinematography at Mowelfund Film Institute.
She is involved with the ST Exposure, an independent media organization
that she co-founded in 2000.
Seorang bocah laki-laki memenuhi ladangnya dengan bendera putih
untuk menghalau burung. Seorang bocah lain membunyikan kaleng-kaleng
berisi kerikil. Transformasi yang unik pun terjadi.

Apple
Sherad Anthony Sanchez, Philippines 2005, Digital Video, 11 minutes
A young girl sings songs for the dead at funerals. Afterwards, occasionally
more is expected of her. This film is a requiem of innocence born
in an already depraved world.
Sherad (born 1984) is a student majoring in Communications with
an obsessive attraction to theories.
Seorang gadis cilik menyanyikan lagu kematian untuk acara penguburan.
Setelahnya, seringkali ia diminta untuk melakukan hal-hal lain.
Film ini adalah requiem terhadap kepolosan yang terlahir di dunia
fana.

Exaggeration
Bryan Blue Cuevas, Philippines 2005, Digital Video, 7 minutes
Exaggeration is an experimental short film made under rigid rules
for a workshop conducted by filmmaker Jon Jost and sound recordist
Andrew Boulton in NFTI, London.
Bryan, an advertising major in the University of San Carlos, has
had experience with a video camera for almost a year.
Film ini adalah hasil workshop membuat film dengan peraturan-peraturan
yang dibuat oleh pembuat film Jon Jost dan perekam suara Andrew
Boulton di NFTI, London.
